The Foreign Ministry on Friday identified the two Kenyan truck drivers who were captured by Iraqi forces while bringing humanitarian aid to Iraq and said efforts were being made to secure their release.

David Mukuria and Jacob Kamau Maina were working for a Saudi-owned, Kuwait-based company contracted by the British government when they were captured, said a ministry official, who did not want to be further identified. The official declined to identify the company and gave no other details.

The official said Kenya's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mohamed Mahat, was working with the International Committee of the Red Cross to inform Iraqi authorities that the men are humanitarian workers and should be released.

The men were first shown to be held by Iraqi forces when the Arab satellite station Al-Jazeera broadcast pictures of the pair on Wednesday.

Kenya's official position on the war is that it only supports armed action in Iraq if backed by a U.N. resolution; Kenya believes the war could have been avoided through dialogue.
